Shadow box is a term used when framing anything that is three dimensional.
Framing personal keepsakes such as war metals or a family heirlooms, like teacups, are examples of shadowbox framing.
The depth of the frame depends on the objects, but the mat boards and frame choices are endless. This style of framing is very personal because it is usually custom fitting sentimental objects in a frame to be put on display. If multiple objects are being framed, design and layout needs to be well thought out.
First, decide what is important enough to have framed, and does it need to be preserved in special casings. Second, layout how you would like to see the objects displayed. Remember size of frame and depth, will be a major factor in your decision.
