About the Artist

Lorne Bunyan was born and raised in Alberta. Lorne has painted landscapes in the Alberta Foothills near Pincher Creek and Southern Alberta, immediately North and East of the Oldman River.

Lorne believes that mastering watercolour painting, while for himself a difficult task, is one way of preserving and communicating the importance of wilderness preservation in the Alberta Foothills. A few areas Lorne chose to focus on for his paintings were the Elk Pass, Mount Yamnuska, and the Deer and Elbow Drainage areas. The famed "Alberta Storm" is also displayed in many of his paintings.

A documentary entitled "Journeys in the Whaleback" was aired on CBC in 2007. Information about the documentary and others in the "Discovering Wild Canada" Series can be found on the Discovering Wild Canada CBC website.

Whaleback Ridge Series
Whaleback Ridge Whaleback Ridge, Big Sky
"Beginning in 1885 Canadians recognized the need to protect wilderness areas and began to create National Parks; eight in Alberta alone. Since that time the political struggles to downsize and rearrange these areas have been a long and depressing saga. Among others, the "Alberta Wilderness Association" has taken part in the ebb and flow of these struggles and today the Association continues to be vigilant and aggressive."

Whaleback Ridge Alberta Foothills
"Up until 1995, the Whaleback Ridge continued to be the focus of discussions between those who saw financial opportunity and those who strove to protect the wilderness. It was then that I turned south again and began to observe, collect and paint the landscapes available north of the Oldman River - the "Whaleback Ridge" with its vertebrae distributed north for thirty kilometers, covered increasingly with Spruce, Aspen, Pine and Rare Douglas Fir."
– Lorne Bunyan
The "Alberta Foothills" watercolour painting is inspired by Lorne Bunyan's "Prairie Storm" series and influenced by the "Whaleback Ridge" series.

Whaleback Ridge, Watercolor Study
I was caught up in the enchantment of the Whaleback region and needed to record what my eyes and hands had to say. The bison, the heritage, the folk tales of the old men and games, the ice ages, the floods, and the winters blowing from the west through the mountains and north from the arctic."

Mary Dover Garden Series
Mary Dover, Priddis District Oksi
"I was always aware of Mary Dover and her literary and artistic contributions to the community. Her artistry in particular is what drew my attention to her. In 1960, Mary bought a piece of land on the edge of the escarpment to the east of what is now Hwy 22, South - Near Priddis." It was described as "cow pasture" in 1960 but suited her artistic pursuits perfectly. Her friendship with David Crowchild grew as he helped her fence the property and named it "Oksi", which is Blackfoot for "A Good Place."
– Lorne Bunyan
"During Mary Dover's last years I was privileged to visit and explore, photograph and sketch throughout her land named "Oksi" in a variety of seasons. On one occasion I sat and conversed with Mary on her bench facing the front of her house. During that time we fell silent for twenty minutes or so as only trusting and self confident friends could do. During her last year she called me aside during a group visit and led me down the steps north of her house toward the sunken garden. She drew my attention toward an old bench to the right at the back of a new alcove and said, "Lorne - see what I have just made? I call it 'A Place for Holding Hands'."

Lake and Trees
Given Lorne's passion for nature, it is no surprise his works were inspired by it. However, the process of creating was also inspiring for Lorne, and he captured the stages of creation for his Lake and Trees painting.
