Crayon Art
If you have old crayons with the paper peeled off or broken pieces that you’re thinking of throwing out don’t! Get together with family or a friend, and make art.

The recipe:
3 - Different types of wax crayons to consider; metallic (gemstone), fluorescents, regular
1 - Old cheese grader
1 - Iron (old, preferably without the steam holes)
1 – 16X20 Plain packing paper, (newsprint may damage your iron)
2 – 5X7 Pieces of mat board (hard board) colour is good
1 – adult with experience in ironing
Stage 1
- Layout your crayons and decide on colour selection
- Your packing paper should be flat on the working surface
- Place one 5X7 mat board on packing paper, colour side up
Stage 2
- Sprinkle shredded crayon onto mat board
- Select two colours that will complement the mat board colour (eg. Blue & orange, on a yellow mat)
- Once you have placed your choice of shredded crayon on the mat board, place the second 5X7 mat on top of the shredded crayons
Stage 3
- Now fold the packing paper around the sandwiched mat boards
- Move the hot iron over the paper, you can feel the wax melting by the mat boards moving closer together
Stage 4
- After 30seconds to 1minute remove iron, and unfold packing paper, quickly separate the mat boards while wax is still warm
- You now have two pieces of art
- Repeat this process, with metallic crayons or different colours
- The layering or build up of wax will create unique effects.
- Take a pencil and draw onto the soft wax adding to the design.
Stage 5
- Take an 8X10 mat with 5X7 opening and frame your art
- Or cut out a section of you art that you like best and frame that

On March 30, 2007 I was a visiting artist at St. John Fine Art School. The students had a day of art and entertainment, and an art show.
The following are quotes from the grades 4, 5, and 6.

The kids also drew me some thank-you's.
